A couple of months ago I picked up this game called Shatter through PSN. I don’t play the game all that much anymore but one thing that remains is the music. The game is a “Retro-inspired brick-breaking game” featuring some kick ass music tracks. I love great music in games having such fond memories of Command, Iridium, Ghosts and Goblins etc. etc. from the C46 era. Electronic music in games have progressed far from the 4bit days but technical competence and 9.2 surround sound systems have nothing to do with a great tune. Shatter delivers in abundance – both in game play value but also in the music as well. Simply put it is the best in game concept music that I have heard in a decade.

Have a listen, and get the sound track. Oh it’s written by Module (interview).

A new wave of music listening is upon us with the onslaught of bluray. A medium capable of high definition 1080p standard image but more importantly stunning 24bit resolution PCM sound. Rush released their Snakes & Arrows Live on bluray shortly before Christmas thus nailing it firmly to my wish list at the very top. This is the third concert bluray to hit my system and I have not been disappointed yet. AC/DC and ZZ Top both delivered quality that could not be obtained through the ordinary DVD medium where many releases have resorted to the snotty 192kbps AC3 sound wise. Pardon my french but it hurts my audiophile heart to own so many technically inferior DVD releases that easily could have been so much more.

This Rush release contains pretty much everything you could want in such a release. Huge setlist, brilliant image and sound quality (yes it’s got PCM stereo, yeah!) although a few items is missing. A tour video is missed and also a couple of interviews would have been nice. I love how Rush seems to be in constant motion which really shines through in concert when playing the Snakes & Arrow material of which there is plenty. I miss Animate from counterparts, but look at the list for yourself (ie. wiki). Alex Lifeson have masterminded some pretty funny content on the disc that I will not spoil for you here – it’s got to be experienced. The outtakes from that endeavor is even funnier than the comedy itself. Nuff said, it’s 4 star experience in my book.

If you use google and search for “Guitar Hero” a mind-boggling 29.900.000 hits will be served. Well here is another one for the collection. I recently purchased Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock (twin guitar edition) for my wifes birthday party. It would be fair to say that she is only mildly interested in music having only the late Austrian pop icon Falco as the sole star on the musical sky. After punching power cords for a couple of practice nights I have begun to notice a distinct change in her behaviour. Foot tapping, slight head movement / nodding and not to forget actual comments about music on the radio. It seems that this button mashing game has achieved where I have failed for more than ten years. If that is not worth mentioning and thus generating another hit on google I do not know what is.

Thank you Guitar Hero. There is hope yet.

Watch this demo of how the game should be played

Picked it up on my way home from work. Pressed play in the car. Went home banging!

The new record is agressive as St. Anger, melodic as Justice/Puppets, but most of all it’s shows a return to the old influences such as the twin guitars of Iron Maiden and occult sounding guitars of Merciful Fate. The songs are complex and lengthy so I keep wondering whats in store when it gets a grip in my mind and really opens up. Out of the box I can only find one word that fits: BANGING!

Sound quality? … no it’s not a badly produced as St. Anger, and the level of compression matches what you would expect in 2008. They have aimed for a more slick and clear sound with a nice touch of bottom end bloom.
